English Language Placement Exam (ELPE)

The English Language Placement Exam (ELPE) is required for all incoming freshmen who have not yet fulfilled the University of California’s Entry-Level Writing Requirement and whose home language is not English or whose writing shows second language interference.

The ELPE is a two-hour online language writing assessment test that will allow you to register for required writing courses towards fulfilling the UC Entry-Level Writing Requirement. There is no fee to take the ELPE. You will be notified if you are required to take the ELPE. Students who do not take the ELPE when required will have a hold placed on their account.

For more information, go to http://iae.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/about_elpe.html.  If you still have questions, email iae@ucdavis.edu.

Foreign Language Placement Exam

Foreign language requirements are based on your college AND on your major. Some UCD colleges do not have a foreign language requirement, but a major in that college may have one. For example, the College of Agriculture does not have a foreign language requirement, but their major in International Agriculture does. To be sure, it is best to speak with your major advisor as soon as possible since some majors require as many as two years of foreign language proficiency.
