Carolyn: A committee met last year to discuss what the most important changes would be to campus if we wanted to help all of our students enjoy better academic success. One of the top answers was enhancing tutoring services. A committee is meeting, starting next month, to help our campus expand help for writing as well as other STEM courses (like chemistry and math).

Q: Can we create a webpage for personal peer to peer tutoring help on campus?   Like a space for students to offer tutoring to other students via a web-page housed and facilitated by UC Davis. I see paper postings on boards with numbers and subjects... I also see post for books... I imagine a 'craigslist' like functionality that students can use to post tutoring services, books for sale…

What is UC Davis doing to improve advising for students? 

We are always improving our training programs for academic advisors. UC Davis has a wonderful program where experienced advisors—and student affairs experts—teach other advisors important skills so they can best support our students. They learn about our technology systems, best practices in working with students, and how to work with students from many cultural backgrounds. And all advisors complete it—so that’s a real sign of how much our advisors care about doing their best to serve our Aggies.

The Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education is the campus’s lead administrator for undergraduate student academic success. She works with the associate deans in the colleges to make sure students have sufficient courses and excellent academic advising and the academic senate to help new undergraduate degree programs emerge and existing ones to stay strong.

Phil Kass - Teaching Matters A Lot

Philip H. Kass, the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, takes a dive into explaining the importance of teaching. In the video, Kass discusses the effects that teaching have on students, ways to be recognized for outstanding teaching, and much more.

Janine Wilson, Economic Development

Wilson’s course is an upper-division elective in the economics major, which means large classes with students at a variety of preparation levels. The hybrid format lets students watch the lectures as many times as necessary. Videos incorporate the Learning Glass, a tool that allows her to illustrate her points on a board while facing the class -- improving the delivery mode of the traditional whiteboard/blackboard while preserving the lecture for future viewing.

Claudia Sánchez-Gutiérrez, Spanish for Travelers

To free up classroom time for dialog, Sánchez-Gutiérrez created videos to teach vocabulary and grammar for home study. The videos use vividly designed scenarios and puppets to create engaging dialogs for travelers, such as “In the Taxi” and “At the Market.”
