Undergraduate Education funds refresh of Physics lab space

A refresh of physics lab rooms was completed just before the start of summer session, thanks to funding from the Office of Undergraduate Education.

UC Davis Design and Construction Management, along with Building Maintenance Services went to work during the break between spring quarter and the first summer session on the Physics 7 discussion and lab classrooms in the Earth and Physical Sciences Building. All five rooms were updated with refinished lab tabletops and repainted walls and enhanced with audio-visual projectors. Flooring was replaced in three rooms, as well.

10 students, 1 quarter, 2 inventions

Not long after Quarter at Aggie Square launched in fall 2020, students quickly found success through the immersive, undergraduate academic experience. Some participants were admitted to prestigious graduate programs and others earned competitive internship opportunities. This year, one team of undergraduates found success by creating not one, but two innovations as a result of their Experience last fall.

Dave Furlow Steps Down as Honors Director, Associate Dean

Dave Furlow, Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, will step down from his positions as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, Director of the University Honors Program, and Director of the First Year Seminars program at the end of summer. Furlow has been a quiet force in Undergraduate Education since 2015 when he took on his leadership role, overseeing the development of the newly-restructured honors program and doubling and diversifying first-year seminar offerings.

Celebrating Annaliese Franz's Leadership at the Undergraduate Research Center

Chemistry professor Annaliese Franz will transition out of her role as faculty director of the Undergraduate Research Center at the end of summer. Franz has brought extraordinary energy and focus to the center, which facilitates research opportunities for UC Davis undergraduates. The center has grown in scope, influence and impact on campus and systemwide, expanding externally funded projects, philanthropic donations, and research support and opportunities for students.

The Dean Keith Simonton Prize for Creativity in Undergraduate Research is a newly established annual award to support and encourage faculty-guided undergraduate research by UC Davis students. The award recognizes creativity, or the potential for creativity, in undergraduate research or design projects, as well as the student's innovative spirit and motivation.
